NYnet Unveils IoT investment after strong year of growth

Posted on 12th January 2023 in

NYnet, the company behind North Yorkshire’s full fibre broadband network, has invested in  new infrastructure that will transform the way local businesses and organisations can make use of digital connectivity.

NYnet has implemented transformational technology that harnesses energy efficient long range networking for Smart Sensor based applications that will bring significant business benefits at relatively low cost.

The technology, which uses the LoRaWAN network (Long Range, Wide Area Networks)  has a wide range of applications, such as air quality monitoring, flood prevention and heat monitoring.  It enables smart devices to send information wirelessly.

NYnet has deployed over 120 LoRaWAN gateways across North Yorkshire on its own SLA backed, private encrypted network.

Alastair Taylor, CEO of NYnet, said: “The Internet of Things will transform how North Yorkshire businesses and organisations use technology and the internet, making our region a leader in digital connectivity.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who has a possible problem in mind for IoT to solve, that they would like to see developed in 2023,” he added. The possible solutions include, but are not limited to, waste bins or grit bins, car park sensors, footfall, water and moisture sensors, oil tank levels, energy, location sensors and trackers.

The investment comes after a record year for NYnet which saw the appointment of Alastair as the firm’s new CEO and expansion of its full fibre network to business parks across the county, making it available to more than 1,000 businesses for the first time.

2022 also saw NYnet complete its roll-out of free public wi-fi to 21 market towns in the region and connect a record 212 North Yorkshire schools to its network. As a result of NYnet’s ongoing collaboration with the county’s education sector, North Yorkshire was recently ranked third in the country for high speed school broadband.

In rural communities, tens of thousands of homes and businesses have benefited from an ambitious programme of superfast broadband connectivity thanks to NYnet. The multi-million pound scheme to dramatically enhance broadband speeds in the county began a decade ago, with the third and final phase now completed and more than 190,000 premises now enjoying faster and more reliable broadband connections.

In its latest move to drive private sector growth, NYnet is expanding its network at 15 regional business parks, including Hornbeam Park, which will become North Yorkshire’s biggest full fibre business park. The project is being supported by the Digital Enterprise Grant which will match fund investments made by businesses on the site.

Alastair said: “Our plan now is to expand our private sector portfolio and respond to the commercial needs of our customers so that we can continue to develop new technologies to support their growth.”
