Event Wi-fi for Armed Forces Day

As part of Scarborough Borough Council’s preparations to host the Armed Forces Day National Event 2022 (AFDNE22), organisers were keen to expand the popular free wi-fi coverage that NYnet had already rolled out to more of the event area, including around the Castle headland and into North Bay. The original wi-fi had been delivered by NYnet in collaboration with North Yorkshire County Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership.

The Project

NYnet was asked to expand the existing wi-fi coverage to extend along the sea front to cover the area of the parade and AFDNE22 event area. The wi-fi needed to be reliable, resilient and delivered to meet the tight timescales of the event.

The aim was to provide wi-fi that would enable event organisers, visitors and those taking part to stay connected as well as facilitating the use of technology as part of the event (such as streaming video of the event iteself).

Part of the service NYnet delivered included the provision of a separate password secured network for event organisers and Military, there as part of the security and contingency planning for such a high profile event.

NYnet’s role

A Project Manager was allocated to attend weekly progress meetings to discuss timeline, risks and requirements and were responsive to the needs of the organisers. This continued through from project conception through to final completion leading up to the AFDNE22 event.

NYnet provided a full design and build service, both expanding  the existing wi-fi network along the Cleveland Way and onto West Pier Car Park, as well as installing new coverage along the length of Marine Drive from Luna Park, along Royal Albert Drive to the junction with Albert Road on North Bay. A key feature of this was the provision of 2 points of presence (PoPs) or access points to give the service additional resilience by making sure it would still work, even if one of them went down.

NYnet set up two separate networks (customised Service Set Identifiers – SSIDs), one for the public to access and one password protected for event staff and the military. This meant that if there was an incident during the event, NYnet could take the public network down and protect all the bandwidth for use by emergency responders. This was an important element of the security and contingency planning for the event.

One of NYnet’s engineers was on site throughout the event, actively monitoring the network and ready to provide technical support if needed.

The outcome

The wi-fi project was delivered to time, cost and agreed specification. NYnet received positive feedback from the Client that the event was a huge success with no faults or issues identified. The event organisers were reassured by NYnet’s professional approach and contingency measures for emergency scenarios.

Indeed there was a significant spike in both number of clients and bandwidth used on the event day, showing that the network was well utilised and stood up to the demands of the day.

What the client says

“NYnet listened carefully to our needs and approached the project with professionalism. We had complete confidence in their ability to deliver a solution that would be ready in time and would work effectively on the day. They took responsibility for the success of the project right through from the planning stages to the day itself, when they had someone on site to make sure everything went smoothly.”
