Leyburn, North Yorkshire, 30th July 2019.  North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) came under additional pressure in July 2019.  North Yorkshire was experiencing a months’ rainfall in four hours.  While the Fire Service crews were out answering emergencies and supporting the community due to the extreme flooding, they returned to Leyburn Fire station to discover it was under 4 feet of water.  The Fire Station was completely unusable; the flood water had destroyed all the ICT equipment.  It is likely that the site will be completely out of action until early 2020.

There was therefore an urgent requirement to find a suitable temporary location for the Leyburn Fire Crew.  A new site was found which had the space required but had no connectivity to raise an emergency call.  That same afternoon NYnet built a 3G solution which NYFRS could use in the short term to become operational again.  This solution was only required for 4 hours until NYnet provided a more permanent solution.

An urgent Blue Light order was raised by NYnet with Openreach for an NGA service, which NYnet then pushed through the necessary escalation channels within Openreach.  Within 24 hours of Leyburn Fire Station being flooded, NYnet had managed to get Openreach to deliver a new NGA connection into the new temporary Fire Station.  NYnet technicians were ready on site with a new router pre-configured as per the existing site.  As soon as the new Openreach NGA service was delivered, NYnet was able to install the router quickly and commission service within minutes.

Kyle Whittle (Head of IT Services and Support, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue) said “Just a quick note to say a massive thank you to you and your teams’ efforts in getting the temporary location at Leyburn up and running with a data connection. The speed and efficiency you have shown to us, especially as a blue light in an emergency situation, was tremendous and very much appreciated. Can you please pass on my thanks to all involved.”

NYnet was established in 2007 by North Yorkshire County Council.  NYnet has built and operates a high capacity fibre network covering the Region and successfully provides wide area network (WAN) and Managed Internet Access.  NYnet’s service and network is CAS(T), ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 accredited.
