Ambitions to offer greater flexibility and resilience to public sector organisations across the North of England have taken a step forward.
NYnet, the high-speed broadband connectivity provider set up by North Yorkshire County Council, has secured a contract with Yorkshire and Humber Public Services Network (YHPSN) to provide the national roaming service, Govroam, to more than 40 public sector bodies across the region.
These are predominantly NHS organisations, as well as local councils and emergency services, and they join NYnet’s existing Govroam users, which include the County Council, district councils and health agencies.
NYnet is now the largest provider of Govroam in the UK and, with YHPSN, aims to build on this success to connect all public sector sites across the North of England.
Govroam allows employees of any public sector organisation to connect seamlessly to their network at any enabled public sector premises. This means partners can share information easily and quickly and share workspaces.
County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said: “It is essential that public sector partners in local councils, health organisations and emergency services are able to collaborate smoothly and efficiently to serve, inform and protect the public. We see this need in the response to major issues, including currently the Covid-19 pandemic and recent incidents arising from severe winter weather. Fast, reliable connectivity is vital to support the response to such challenging events, and the expansion of the Govroam system by NYnet will play an important part in this.”
Karen Kennedy, Partnership and Relationship Manager for YHPSN, said: “I am pleased that the Yorkshire and Humber Public Services Network partnership has completed the migration of our partners to NYnet Govroam Managed Service. It has been a fantastic team effort during challenging times and a great example of collaboration and working together for the Yorkshire and Humber region.”

Over the past three years, NYnet has increased North Yorkshire’s broadband coverage from 60 per cent to more than 90 per cent of premises, enabling the County Council to deliver opportunities to both residents and businesses.
