Welcome to NYnet - Broadband transformation for North YorkshireNYnet is a public and private sector commercial venture created in order to provide a communications network that is capable of delivering multiple high quality services to citizens, business and public sector bodies.
The lead role is taken by North Yorkshire County Council with support from Yorkshire Forward and Government Office Yorkshire and Humber. Our private sector technology partner is BT who will work with NYnet to deliver, monitor and maintain the network to the highest standards.
This represents new thinking in the UK about the role of the public sector in providing leadership in harnessing the capability of advanced broadband to stimulate economic regeneration, deliver services to citizens and gain greater public sector efficiencies.
The full benefit of aggregating connectivity requirements was only the first step in optimising public sector spend to benefit the community. Further benefits to small business have accrued following the ADSL enablement of all of the remaining exchanges in North Yorkshire, giving the sub region a broadband take-up rate that is higher than the national average.
To establish the potential benefits to the region, a feasibility study which involved technical and business modelling was undertaken. By creating an appropriate business vehicle, this collaboration between public sector and commercial partners has created a visionary venture that will benefit everyone in North Yorkshire.
NYnet will create a new, high quality telecommunications network offering a range of enhanced services previously unavailable in North Yorkshire.
By creating a world class, high-speed communications infrastructure across North Yorkshire, it will offer Service Providers the ability to supply new broadband services to approximately 330,000 households and 50,000 SMEs and SOHOs in the sub region. These services will enable North Yorkshire to be at the forefront of the next wave of technological advancement, transforming the economy of the County.
NYnet aims to provide benefits to local authorities and citizens in the following areas: Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby and York.
The key objective of NYnet is to create a world-class platform capable of supporting economic and social transformation of North Yorkshire. We believe that the availability of new broadband services from NYnet partners could create a major economic uplift in an area such as North Yorkshire. As new services become a reality, knowledge based industries can grow to meet the new demand created. Equally, existing businesses can exploit new services to reach new markets and increase efficiency.
As a larger number of public and private sector services become more reliant on digital content and interaction, this increases the challenge of ensuring a socially inclusive policy toward all sectors of society. NYnet has a clear policy aim to help facilitate access for all citizens to the services offered by the public and private sector.
The Government has challenged Local Authorities and public sector organisations to use 'e-services' to improve the quality and efficiency of services to citizens. The aim is to cost effectively meet internal corporate networking needs of the public sector and provide a platform to deliver innovative services direct to citizens and businesses.
